Humble Beginnings
Damola hails from the southwestern part of Nigeria, where he was brought up amidst modest surroundings. Driven by his natural curiosity and determination to make a difference, Damola pursued a degree in petroleum engineering, providing him with an opportunity to cultivate his analytical aptitude and problem-solving capabilities.
Joining Zindi
Upon completing his education, Damola has been working as a petroleum engineer for six years. Four years ago, while he was still working as an engineer, he set out to explore the world of technology and data science. Even though he didn’t have a formal education in the field, he took online courses, joined Zindi where he worked on real-world projects to polish his talents, and devoured various resources he could find online. His expertise in predictive analytics, machine learning, and data manipulation increased with each obstacle he overcame and dataset he examined.
Today, he ranks #6 in Nigeria and #17 overall on Zindi’s online leaderboard that ranks its community of 70,000 data science and AI practitioners from around the world based on performance in solving real-world problems. Damola has successfully completed over 20 challenges on the platform.
Perseverance pays off
However, the path to success in data science is filled with challenges and Damola candidly reflects on the hurdles encountered along the way. From rejections from job applications to mastering complex algorithms and then to the sleepless nights. Yet, it was through these challenges that Damola found the strength and patience required especially during the process of iteration and upskilling quickly on new topics, emerging stronger and more resilient than ever before.
“Solving real life data problems is exciting, it’s not only about the technical aspects, it’s also about making a tangible difference in the world. With every challenge comes an opportunity to learn and grow,” Damola shared with us in a recent interview.
